Heinz continues cleanup from fire

Ontario — Cleanup and restoration crews are now working continuously to restore the H.J. Heinz Company’s Ontario factory after a fire on Dec. 21.

The fire was in the packaging area of the factory, and Heinz is conducting its own investigation, working in conjunction with local and state officials, into the cause of the fire, according to Heinz spokesman Michael Mullen.

“The Heinz team at the facility responded quickly and professionally and we appreciate the speed at which the local fire department reacted to minimize damage to the facility,” Mullen said via e-mail.

The fire was initially detected around 8:30 p.m. by a patrolling Ontario police officer who reported large amounts of smoke coming from the factory, according to Ontario Police dispatch. A factory security worker also contacted the authorities.

Initial reports suggested the fire was electrical, but no official cause has been confirmed.
